Generation No. 1

Jan Verjans (aka Joannes or John Ferrians), son of Joannes Verjans and Agnes Nooben, born 10 July 1798 in Schalkhoven, Belgium and died 31 March 1881 in Hennepin County, Minnesota.  Married (1) unknown date in unknown location to Anna Lambrier, daughter of unknown parents, born unknown date in unknown location and died unknown date in unknown location.  (2) 23 December 1844 in Berg En Terblyt, Netherlands to Maria Gertude Fransen, daughter of Wilhelmus (William) Fransen and Agnes Verjans, born 28 December 1822 in Werm, Belguim and died 15 April 1882 in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Jan Verjans, his wife Maria (Gertrude) and five of their children (and she was pregnent with their sixth at the time) came to the U.S., and arrived in New York on 2 September 1862 aboard the ship Magdalene which sailed from the port of Antwerp, Belgium. The master of the ship was H. Henke.
I found the passenger list in the "Germans To America" set of volumes in number 14, covering the dates from January 1861 to May 1863. On page 341, I found the Magdaline, from Antwerp, Belgium to New York, U.S.A., arrived 2 September 1862. They are listed here as: VARIENS, JEAN Age 58 MALE FARMER, MARIETTE Age 40 FEMALE FARMER, JOHANNES Age 16 MALE FARMER, WILHELM Age 13 MALE FARMER, HUBERTUS Age 11 MALE FARMER, LOUIS Age 7 MALE CHILD, U (unknown name) Age 5 U (unknown sex) CHILD.
Their destination was listed as MN.

The Family name, Verjans, was Americanized (or Englishized) to Ferrians, and later the 's' was dropped from the end by the majority of the family, except for those that moved out west to Washington, they continue to keep the 's' even today.

In 1815, Jan Verjans at the age of 17 was in the Battle of Waterloo.
Jan Verjans occupation was a Weaver.
